A firebreak is a gap in vegetation or other combustible material that acts as a barrier to slow or stop the progress of a wildfire. On his album “Firebreaks”, Elijah Emerson opens us a window to his bittersweet journey of grief, loss, and reflection after losing his childhood home to the CZU fire in northern California in 2020. These slow meditations, dotted only by the quiet clicks and hisses of a ciat-lonbarde plumbutter and scattered fragments of emergency services radio broadcasts call to mind a landscape wiped clear by the flames, but with the promise of regrowth.

Emerson’s sonic restraint across these ten tracks gives the moving moments a powerful feel. Small crescendos and slow chord changes have an intense impact as they pull the listener across barren landscapes, into captivating moments that stand alone like stygian obelisks against the expanse.

Firebreaks was recorded using a Ciat-Lonbarde Plumbutter 2, Soma Lab Lyra-8, Squier Jazzmaster, a small selection of guitar pedals, and a sampling/effects based eurorack modular system.
